A section of Mwandoni residents in Kisauni sub county, Mombasa are up in rams against attempts to grab a football field by a prominent tycoon.

The angry residents said the football field popularly known as Kishada is being eyed by a local tycoon who is using police to harass them.

Led by Athman Kishe, a local coach the residents protested over increased cases of land grabbing and evictions in the area.

They say the grabbing and eviction is mainly targeting the poor and the vulnerable and alleged that a local businessman wants to grab the land and sell it to buyers.

Kishe said the land has been a playing ground for local children since 1975 adding that the land is owned by Waqf (Muslim trust).

Critical asset

He said he has been using the power of sports to prevent youth crime and drug abuse in the area.

Amina Bakari a local woman activist, appealed to authorities to intervene and safeguard the land form grabbers.

Chrispine Odula a Harambee Star player said he “I grew up in the neighbourhood and nurtured my talent in the same field that is being targeted for grabbing,” said Harambee Star Player Chrispine Odula.

He said many youth in the area spend their spare time playing in the field and it would be detrimental if the land is left to the hands of private developers.

Odula said if the land is grabbed many youth will end up engaging in criminal activities and drug and substance abuse.
