Maara claims the 2022 Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship title

Dennis Maara of Limuru Golf Club wins the 100th Edition of the Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship.
Maara won 7 and 6 against his opponent Jay Sandhu of Muthaiga Golf Club.

The Championship started on 16th June 2022 at Royal Nairobi Golf Club and it attracted 90 players from four different countries namely, Uganda (7), Tanzania (1), Ethiopia (1) Kenya 81.
The event started with a stroke-play round where the top 32 qualified to play the Main event-Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship.

It attracted seven junior members who played the event but only two made the cut with Junior Mikael Kihara who lost to Jay Sandhu at the second round and Njoroge Kibugu losing in the semifinals against Jay Sandhu.

During his speech, Dennis Maara thanked his opponent for putting in a good show and fighting till the end. He also thanked the Kenya Golf Union for coming up with a platform where players are able to showcase their talent.

Maara is the first golfer to secure a slot to play the Magical Kenya Open to be played next year.

The Kenya Golf Union Chairman Mr. Njani Ndiritu thanked the Royal Nairobi Golf Club for hosting the 100th Edition of the event.
“The Kenya Golf Foundation was formed in 1928 here at Royal Nairobi Golf Club and it is indeed an honor to be here again to make history once more,” said Mr. Ndiritu.

1. Dennis Maara – 346.3 points
2. Jay Sandhu – 342.6 points
3. John Lejirma – 266.3 points
4. Michael Karanga – 164 points
5. Njoroge Kibugu – 158 points

About Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship;
The Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship, organized by Kenya Golf Union (KGU), is one of the oldest (1910) and most prestigious matchplay events in Kenya.

The event has been hosted by various golf clubs in the country on a rotational basis. Players participating in this event are ranked locally and also in the world rankings by the Royal Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in England.
