Mombasa will host the 15th edition of the sports personality of the year (SOYA) awards.
This is the first time ever the ceremony is being held outside Nairobi.
In an MOU signed on Tuesday afternoon between SOYA awards founder Paul Tergat and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho at the governor’s office, the awards will take place early next year in the Coastal tourists’ destination.
Addressing the media after the signing of the MOU, Tergat said that he will transverse the country in hunting for talents, exuding hopes that he will be accorded the much needed support from all the stakeholders.
On his part, Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho said that by conducting the major sport function in Mombasa will encourage and attract many youth into sports, a situation that will bar them from indulging in social vices among them criminal activities and drug use.
Joho also assured youth in Mombasa that the county government was ready to support and nurture talents.
The 2019 SOYA awards is mainly to encourage active sporting activities in the country.
Top sports personalities from various disciplines will be recognised that day.
