Kenya’s top leading Amateurs revive their supremacy rivals in the 2022 Nyanza Open Golf Championship (Hippo Pot) to be played at the par 70 lakeside Nyanza Golf Club Course, in Kisumu County near the shores of Lake Victoria from Saturday, 10th, September 2022.
Club Captain Dr Ojwang Lusi disclosed yesterday that the two days 36 holes Stokes play event that ends on Sunday, 11th, September 2022 has attracted leading Amateurs across most of the Country’s Golf clubs.
“We welcome all the players and Guests and We are all set for the event. The course is in good condition and playing well,” said Lusi.
He said the event is open to male Amateur golfers both local and International with a valid World handicapping System (WHS) Handicap Index of 18.4 or below on the date of entry.
“Entrants must indicate their details and current Handicap Index on the entry incomplete entry will be rejected, “said Lusi.
He explained that the maximum entry is 70 players and in the event of over-subscription, Preference will be given to lower handicappers.
Home Club’s players to watch include Julius Omolo, David Omollo, Joram Ocholla, Joseph Atito and among others Thomas Oduor.
Golf Park has sent a large team that includes Sammy Mulama, Josephat Rono, Darren Chesumei, Victor Chesumei, Raphael Leming’ani and a Kenya-based Ugandan Michael Alunga who last weekend won the Inaugural 2022 Vasco Da Gama Cup in the Malindi Cup tournament that was added this year by KGU in the KAGC Calendar of events.
Other entrants among others include Nyali’s Caddy William Odeck, National Team Captain Dennis Maara from Limuru, Kenya Railways John Lejirma and Vet Lab’s Isaack Makhoha.
Odeck who was in the top ten from last weekend’s Malindi Open Championship is among four Caddies, Hassan Kalamu Choyo, John Timbe and Dickson Barassa, all from Mombasa’s Nyali Golf and Country Club who are currently under the full sponsorship support program from a German-based Sports Coaching Agency “Lotusglobal” and the non-profit organization “Universal Lighthouse” that has allowed them to advance their golfing career.
“ I have been training hard mainly practising on my swings to ensure my ball is always on the fairways and did more to puttings to improve shot on the greens. I am taking the Nyanza open seriously to grab the trophy and bring it home,” said Odeck.
The four caddies are now able to participate in most of the KGU country-wide events since it started the series on January,9th with the Nairobi foursomes at Muthaiga.
They landed the lucrative support deal in August 2021 through the Agents Chief Executive Officers and Founders of the international High-Sports Performance and Business Consultant and renowned Mental Coach, Bernard Payet and Diploma Sports Scientist, UEFA-A-Licensed Football Coach and Physical, Technical and Nutritional Coach Thomas Mooser.
The Nyanza event is one of the ongoing Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) events organized by the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) and counts toward the Golfer of year (GOTY) award.
The Champion will be crowned after the 2022 Nyali Open Championship from 9th to 11th December to be played on the Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County and the top leaders will gain automatic slots to the 2023 Kenya Open Championship which is a European Tour event.
From Nyanza, the event moves to Vet Lab Sports Club Course for the Kabete Open, then Kericho for the Tea fields and at Nandi Bears Club in the Nandi Bears open.
Then will come to Vipingo Baobab Ridge in Kilifi County for the Kenya Amateur Championship from 2oth to 23rd October before moving to Eldoret for the Manchester Salver.
Kiambu open and Uhuru Shield at Royal Nairobi golf clubs will be the last two hosts in November and the first week of December respectively before the last event at Nyali.
Meanwhile, Junior Golfers will be seeking supremacy in the 2022 Kenya First Nick Faldo Golf Series Kenya Championship to be played at the Limuru Golf and Country club course in Kiambu County from Saturday,10th, September 2022.
The three days 54 holes tournament that ends on Monday, 12th, September 2022 is organized by the
Junior Golf Foundation (JGF), a project of the Kenya Golf Union and the Kenya Ladies Golf Union
According to a release from JGF, the event has attracted Juniors across the Country and is eligible for both Boys and Girls aged from 12 to 21 years with a handicap limit of 28.0 and 36.0 respectively.
Among those to watch includes Juniors Trevor Ngotho, Jesse Waithaka, Nadia Mwakitawa, Mwendwa Mutuku, Joshua Maina and Waweru Karanja, all from Golf Park Golf Club.
This is a Junior event played in 12 Countries across the World and is happening for the first time in Kenya, the winners from each series get to play at the Grand finale in Dubai sometime in December.
