Lamu East Member of Parliament Shariff Athuman has cautioned Lamu security agencies against harassing locals.
He said Lamu residents and especially the youth have become police enemies for no apparent reasons.
He said the issuance of identity cards has been dragged by the Lamu County administration adding that locals’ rights should not be violated.
Addressing locals in his Lamu East constituency, Mr. Athuman appealed to Lamu administration to clearly tell locals the cause of the delay.
He said Lamu dwellers like any other Kenyans should get identity cards without any obstacles.
“If we must go to the headquarters in Nairobi as leaders we will go but we must solve this problem once and for all,” said Shariff.
He said many Lamu youth have failed to secure jobs, cannot pursue higher education and cannot travel abroad to seek employment since they lack identification cards.
“So you want us to stay indoors because when we go out we are thoroughly beaten, harassed and arrested by police because we do not have identity cards?” revealed the Lawmaker.
He said as Lamu County leaders they will fight for the locals’ rights to ensure they get the important documents
Recently Lamu youth decried discrimination on the ID’s issuance exercise in Lamu.
They called for an immediate resumption of the exercise.
However Lamu County registrar of persons Willson Onyango said some youth fail to go out whenever vetting process is announced.
He said the department is working tirelessly to ensure Lamu residents and especially the youth acquire national identification cards.
