Three passengers died on the spot while several others sustained serious injuries after the matatu they were traveling in was involved in a tragic road accident at Kibarani in Mombasa county.
The matatu was heading to Changamwe from Mombasa Island when it veered off the road, rolled several times and landed on the other side of the road, hitting and oncoming canter that was heading to Mombasa Island from Changamwe.
The accident happened early Thursday morning at around 7 am.
Coast regional traffic Commandant Peter Maina said the matatu driver lost control forcing the matatu to roll to the opposite road noting that Kibarani has a dual carriage way.
“Three passengers died on the spot and several others sustained serious injuries, some with broken limbs,” he said.
The injured were rushed to the Coast General Referral hospital where they are receiving urgent medical attention, while the three bodies are preserved in the same hospital’s morgue.
Mr. Maina has appealed to motorists plying Kibarani route to be extra vigilant considering that Kibarani is identified by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) as one of the black spot that has witnessed various tragic accidents.

Kibarani is the only gateway connecting Mombasa Island with Nairobi and other parts of the country.
Both vehicles have been towed to the Makupa police station as police launch investigations on the cause of the accident.
