Renowned Kenyan Hip-hop star Henry Ohanga famously known as Octopizzo has challenged Kenyan youth to ensure they fully participate in the August, 9 general election.
Octopizzo said the youth need to participate by either voting in responsible development-oriented leaders or they battle it out for top leadership themselves.
Addressing youth in Mombasa during a civic education forum dubbed ‘Umechukua’ a challenge to ensure youth register as voters and participate, Octopizzo said youth should take full charge of the country’s leadership by ensuring they are right at the centre of the decision making table.
According to the multi-award winning recording and performing artist, youth will have themselves to blame if they do not get involved in electing only responsible and caring leaders in the August 9 general election.
“Why do we youth let politicians use and misuse us for their selfish gains? We are responsible for our own deeds and we must simply change,” he told journalists at the Tononoka grounds in Mombasa during the civic education entertainment and voters verification exercise.
The Humanitarian and entrepreneur artist who focuses more on fighting poverty, tribal and political wars and who foregrounds youth affairs in his songs, through the Octopizzo Foundation has teamed up with the European Union and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in ensuring his campaign of urging the youth to participate in leadership and governance matters is successful.
“We have traversed Kibra, in Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret and we are now in Mombasa the next destination is Thika, we need to ensure youth lead this country and vie for the presidential and other top seat and not only Members of the County Assemblies.
Addressing the same forum, European Ambassador to Kenya Heinriette Geiger said the European Union is working with Octopizzo Foundation and the youth countrywide to achieve peaceful polls in the forthcoming general election.
“We are here to achieve peaceful polls and we know by teaming up with Octopizzo Foundation and the youth themselves, we are going to achieve our objective,” noted Ms Geiger.
She said the caravan will focus on reaching every part of the country through such concert that interests the youth too.
“We urge all the youth and Kenyans to embrace peaceful political campaigns and peaceful elections as well,” noted the European Ambassador to Kenya.
