Women leaders have sharply opposed the ‘Punguza Mizigo’ initiative fronted by Third Way Alliance party leader Doctor Ekuru Aukot.
Addressing grass roots women leaders from Coast region, Gladys Chepkorir, the CEO ‘INUA MAMA JENGA TAIFA MASHINANI’ MOMBASA CHAPTER, termed the initiative as utterly useless and selfish and designed to take Kenya back to the dark ages.
The National women leader was addressing women at Moi International Airport Mombasa during a grand reception of her arrival from London.
Gladys said she cannot support the ‘Punguza Mzigo’ Initiative because it is ill-advised.
“This constitutional amendment initiative will reduce the one third threshold of the number of women in parliament,” she noted.
Ms Chepkorir said the move will also deny constituents political leadership and representation.
The initiative seeks to change the Constitution to reduce the number of MPs, abolish Woman Representative and Deputy Governor Positions among other reforms to cut the cost of government.
‘Punguza Mizigo’ wants to reduce the cost of Parliament from the current Sh36.8 billion to Sh5 billion annually and save the taxpayer close to Sh31 billion.
It also proposes a single seven-year term for the President down from the current maximum of two five-year terms.
The vocal women leader said through her organisation the initiative has been able to transform the livelihood of women in the grass root.
Chepkorir says her lobby group has been able to empower women economically by initiating income generating projects.
Stela Wandoe ,Mombasa County chairlady INUA MAMA JENGA TAIFA MASHINANI MOMBASA CHAPTER said the lobby has transformed the lives of women in Mombasa County.
She says women have been impacted with skills on entrepreneurship which has enabled them to start income generating projects.
She says the women have now been able to cater for the education of their children and put food on the table.
