The Wiper Party has said it will fully back Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir in the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

This comes after their candidate Mike Mbuvi Sonko was bundled out of the race, a situation that also put Kisauni Member of Parliament Ali Mbogo in an awkward position.

On Friday, Sonko ditched out Wiper Party and the entire Azimio la Umoja Coalition and joined the Kenya Kwanza Political Alliance whose presidential candidate is Deputy President William Ruto.

The turn of political events in Mombasa county has elicited mixed reactions with Wiper Mombasa county Chairperson Sheikh Omar Jabu Twaha blaming Sonko for taking such political steps without informing or engaging the party.

“We are not surprised but equally disappointed with Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s move to Kenya Kwanza, however, it is his political and constitutional right,” noted Sheikh Twaha.

He said Sonko moved to Kenya Kwanza alone as wiper will remain firmly in Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance and fully back Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir for the Mombasa governor.

“He has moved to Kenya Kwanza Alliance alone, Wiper is firmly in Azimio la Umoja political coalition and we will also back Raila Odinga for the presidential bid,” noted Twaha.

He appealed to Mombasa residents, wiper party members, and their supporters to support Nassir so that he clinches the top seat of Mombasa County.

Twaha says Nassir is fit to succeed the incumbent Hassan Ali Joho, further saying that the Mvita MP is a development-oriented leader.

Earlier, Sonko hinted at ditching the Wiper party as his efforts to vie for the Mombasa gubernatorial race were thwarted by the courts.

He has since moved to the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) appealing the Kenya Supreme court verdict of throwing him out of the Mombasa governorship race.

“I’d rather support United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Mombasa governorship candidate Hassan Omar Hassan and not Nassir,” he said in an interview with national television, TV47.

On Friday evening, photos resurfaced of the former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko saying he has officially ditched the Wiper Party and the entire Azimio la Umoja political Coalition for the Kenya Kwanza political alliance.
